Finally, an explanation that makes sense

In fact, calling on Helen Thomas was a notorious method for a hard-pressed White House press secretary to EVADE tough questions from the rest of the press corps. A zany, out-of-left-field protest from Thomas would disrupt a flow of unwelcome queries, maybe spark a tension-breaking laugh, maybe change the subject altogether.

Not at all hard to believe that someone who provided an information avoidance mechanism was the darling of Old Media, is it?

Indeed. St. Helen will be sorely missed.

I had no experience of St. Helen until watching DOD daily press conferences during Desert Storm (or, under the influence of a martini, memory may not serve, Operation Iraqi Freedom — a thing of which many people are apparently not in favor).

Very first thought: Who let that whackjob in the room?

Second thought: Who would be so dumb as to call on her?

Lesson just now learned.

Absolutely. I always wondered the same thing and was happy to finally find out what was really going on.
