Don't blame the victim

I have been meaning to write basically the same thing as this post with regard to the admissions scandal at the University of Illinois. I think the school administration were also victims because as you can see from President Obama, if you mess with the Chicago School of Politics, they will respond with vindictive fury. The voters in the state make going public on such threats a pointless exercise so what can the administrators do except go along? The alternative is to have the all of the students punished.

The only victims here are the tax payers and the students.

What can administrators do? Say no mas to taking money and orders from state and federal governments.

It’s a state University, effectively an agency of the state government. No state money, no University.

I didn’t know that the land grant colleges and universities were set up to be run by state and/or federal bureaucrats.

From what I remember, they were supposed to be institutions of learning and research, not vehicles for social engineering and other claptrap.

I can’t speak to land grand universities in general, but UIUC (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is utterly dependent on state funding and has been for decades. A few percent change in the amount of state funding and there are layoffs. Jobs, even faculty ones, hinge on every single state budget.

What’s changed is the state government which now favors social engineering and related claptrap over learning and research.
