Seriously, why can’t Gates take up sailing or golf like any other self respecting billionaire? You can grouse all you want about The Gilded Age and “Robber Barons”, but at least folks back then did not have to put up with this noxious posturing.

It was a great stunt.

It’s actually pretty common for successful businesspeople to lose their way or even make tiresome fools of themselves when they step out into new worlds. On the right, there are those who decide their success makes them a perfect candidate for political office and so they launch naive, ill-prepared campaigns with nothing much more than simplistic promises to bring business principles to government based on “efficiency and accountability”. Often they stumble early when they make an inappropriate joke or show they can’t name the captal of France. On the left, those who go the charitable foundation route often seem to forget or disown everything they learned and become putty in the hands of leftwing activists, particularly the sultry doe-eyed ones. I saw this when I headed up an NGO in the eighties—I was astounded by how many business people on my board seemed to relish getting in touch with their inner marxists over cocktails. That’s one of the reasons so many foundations like Ford and MacArthur tilt sharply left over time. They can be sitting ducks for bafflegab and just too arrogant to admit they are out of their leagues.

The case for free markets does not rest on the superior intelligence and wisdom of those making them work.

The capital of France - isn’t that Riyadh?

I don’t think Gates is on the left, but his wife is, and wasn’t the charity her project? Amazing how the same people pop up over and over again in these leftist projects. You have to give the left credit for energy.

That’s Conquest’s Second Law of Politics in fact. But Gates is a piker. If he wants to do nasty stuff to people and have them still suck up to him because he’s just that rich, and they will, then he should’ve brought in an AK or a suicide belt or something.
