What will we do with the interns now?

Remember all the jokes about how you needed to have people stand around and flap their arms to keep the motion detecting lights in cube farms from turning off? That’s so old school now — instead you can buy a mouse jiggler which plugs in to a USB port and waves the mouse around so the screen saver doesn’t come up. The wonders of miniturization.

If they are unpaid interns, you can harass them sexually without criminal or civil liability, at least in the District of Columbia.

Although not having a screen saver come up does seem unclear on the concept of screen savers. The gizmo presumably could be marketed as a screen destroyer.

They’re actually used by IT staff who are sent to fiddle with some cubicle inmate’s computer. In such an environment, if the screen saver comes up, it can only be turned off with the inmate’s password, which the staffer doesn’t know. SWIPIAW computers at home are set that way and it’s very annoying if she brings me in to consult on some arcane programming issue and I pop down for a cup of coffee and come back to an unusable computer, especially if she’s taken off to do some errands.
