A common scenario in many science fiction novels is a stellar diaspora followed by something Really Bad happening to Earth (nuclear war, runaway nanotech, asteroid bombardment, the Sun going nova, etc.). What I want to know is, what would that mean for the Second Coming1?
1 First for our Jewish readers.
The Book of Revelation says that before the Second Coming there will be:
- Famine and war that kill 1/4 of humanity (Rev 6:5-6:8),
- A massive earthquake that flattens mountain regions and sinks islands (6:12-14),
- A Tunguska-like comet explosion that burns 1/3 of the world’s forests (Rev 8:7),
- A meteor impact in the ocean that kills 1/3 of all sealife (8:8),
- A third meteor named Wormwood, that contaminates 1/3 of the world’s fresh water (8:9), causing the most deaths.
After that come massive volcanic eruptions (9:2,17-18) and locusts (9:7-10) that kill another 1/3 of humanity (9:15).
And that is just the beginning of the Tribulation period.
I get the impression that the author of Revelations stumbled onto some really bad mushrooms.
